What is ‘Revenge Travel’? It’s the feeling that has been bottled up and waiting to be released just like the caged birds wanting to be set free. It is like a new demand that has been pent up amongst the travelers for being cooped up for so many months. In simpler words, it is the continuous urge to spend and splurge on travel when everything is back to normal.

Did you know this concept isn’t new and dates back to the early 1980s? It all started in China (Yeah, even this. If you know what I mean) during the devastating poverty of the Cultural Revolution where ‘revenge spending’ by consumers emerged. In April, a Hermes store in Guangzhou made whooping €2.4 million on the first day it opened, showing that (rich)people are keen to make up for the time stuck inside by spending again.

As the COVID crisis prolongs, the desire to travel intensifies. Humans are social creatures with an inherent desire to explore, experience, and make new connections.

According to Fuel Travel, a US-based hotel software provider and hotel marketing agency found out during a survey that 59% wanted to travel in 2020, 14% in 2021, and only 3% wanted to stay home altogether.

With flights resuming, then hotels and now tour companies look like the industry is slowly getting back on its feet. It seems like the demand for domestic travel has increased more quickly as compared to international travel due to restrictions imposed by governments.
